Biography

William "Bill" Chuirazzi is a research scientist currently working as the instrument scientist for the ZEISS Xradia 520 Versa X-ray microscope located at the Material and Fuels Complex's (MFC) Irradiated Materials Characterization Laboratory (IMCL). In this role, Dr. Chuirazzi performs X-ray computed tomography (XCT) to nondestructively examine a variety of both radiological and non-rad samples in 3D, including nuclear fuels, structural materials, advanced manufactured materials, and battery materials. In addition to his XCT work, he also has experience with neutron computed tomography (nCT), image processing and analysis, and radiation detection, particularly with the development of neutron scintillators.

Bill started at INL in 2018 as a Graduate Fellow where he worked on his PhD utilizing MFC's Neutron Radiography (NRAD) Reactor to perform nCT and develop boron-based neutron scintillator screens. Upon completion of his PhD in 2020, he became a Russell Heath Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow with a research project focused on image analysis and combining nCT and XCT datasets. He transitioned to his current role of instrument scientist in April 2022.

Dr. Chuirazzi holds a bachelors degree in Engineering Physics (2015), and masters (2017) and PhD (2020) degrees in Nuclear Engineering, all from The Ohio State University.

Research Interests

As an instrument scientist, my research interests are primarily focused on developing and applying tomographic techniques to acquire nondestructive volumetric information on a variety of samples. This includes not only method development for data acquisition but also data reconstruction and image analysis techniques. In addition to tomography and image processing, I also have experience with the testing and development of sensors for radiation detection, with an emphasis on neutron scintillators.
