Biography

Jorgen Rufner is a material scientist and Advanced Manufacturing Group Lead (B614) within the Energy and Environment Science and Technology Directorate at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). His experience covers powder processing, EFAS/SPS technology, thermodynamics of grain boundary engineering, nanocrystalline ceramics, atomic resolution analytical transmission electron microscopy, and industrial process scale up. Current work focuses on developing the science and technology of the EFAS process and related applications, novel carbon-carbon composite manufacturing and applications, and driving the scaling of EFAS technology for creating industrial relevantly sized parts. He joined INL in 2020 after 6 years of working in the private sector on semiconductor process technology and high-volume manufacturing as an EUV Lithography Development Engineer and VP of Technology at Intel Corp. and IMAT Inc., respectively. His PhD was completed at University of California, Davis in 2014 where he studied electric field effects on grain boundary structures and microstructural evaluation of ceramic systems during EFAS and the thermochemistry of nanocrystalline ceramic materials. Prior to that he researched LAFAD deposited oxygen barrier coatings for use on intermediate temperature solid

oxide fuel cell interconnects and as a member of Lotusworks CM performed project management and start-up activities on multiple power plant construction projects throughout Washington and Oregon states.
