Biography

Timothy McJunkin is a Distinguished Researcher in the Power and Energy System at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). He also serves as the Technical Director of the Net-Zero Microgrid Program at INL. His current research is centered around cross-cutting research to develop resilience solutions that assist in the decarbonization of the energy sector and human systems automation directed at critical-infrastructure. Since joining INL in 1999, he has accumulated research and development experience in diverse domains including robotics/automation, welding/nondestructive, analytical chemistry, and resilient control of critical infrastructure. He led the nondestructive examination development and was a key contributor in the robotic system development for the Yucca Mountain Waste Package Closure System. His record of achievement includes 26 peer review journal articles, editing one book and contributing 4 book chapters, 14 patents on topics of computer systems, analytical chemistry instrument systems, industrial automation, Smart Grid, and nondestructive examination. Prior to joining INL, he was with Compaq Computer Corporation’s Industry Standard Server Group (1994-1999) leading board level motherboard design of multiple server products. He holds a Master of Science in electrical and computer engineering from Utah State University and is pursuing his Ph.D. in the University of Idaho’s Electrical Engineering Department. At Utah State he was awarded a Rocky Mountain NASA Space Grant Consortium fellowship for his work on autonomous planetary vehicles. He has served an adjunct professor for Idaho State University Electrical Engineering department. He was inducted into the INL inventor hall of fame in 2009, is an IEEE Senior Member and was part of an R&D 100 Award winning team in 2021.
