Biography

Dr. Palash Kumar Bhowmik is a staff scientist (former post-doctoral research associate) in the Irradiation Experiment Thermal-Hydraulics Analysis department (C140) at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) with a research focus on reactor system thermal-hydraulics design and analysis. Dr. Bhowmik’s academic background includes a masters and a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, and an MBA. He has industry experience with proven management skills in (a) thermal power plant (commissioning and operation), (b) TRIGA MARK-II nuclear research reactor (analog-to-digital system upgradation, beam port leakage kit development and reactor system R&D), and (c) oil refinery (instrument, inspection, plant shutdown scheduling and management). He received professional development training from organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

At present, Dr. Bhowmik is mostly involved with the development of test facilities for the advanced small modular reactor (SMR) system under the United States (U.S.) Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Reactor Demonstration Project (ARDP). In addition, Dr. Bhowmik has provided invaluable contributions to more than 10+ research and development (R&D) projects related to irradiation experiments and thermal analysis. Among his scholarly contributions are 25+ publications in SCI journals, 30+ conference papers, 130+ verified reviews from 25+ distinguished journals, 04+ grant proposals reviewed for the DOE–Office of Science SBIR/STTR, and several invited talks. He has contributed to five invited talks on reactor systems for energy applications at university campuses and research institutions. He has served as technical session chair and co-chair for several international conferences. Dr. Bhowmik is serving editorial roles as associate editor, guest editor, and co-editor in several referred journals like Frontiers in Nuclear Engineering, Frontiers in Energy Efficiency in Buildings and Urban Environments, Progress in Nuclear Energy, Energies, and Process. His leadership prowess is evident in his mentorship of a Ph.D. student, one masters student, two DOE SULI program interns, and two high school students. He holds affiliations with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the American Society of Nuclear Engineers (ANS).
