Biography

John Smart is the director of the National Charging Experience Consortium, or ChargeX Consortium, which convenes national laboratories and private industry to measure and improve the reliability and usability of public electric vehicle charging infrastructure in North America. Prior to this position, John served in the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, helping to launch the office and establish its Standards and Reliability program. Before joining the Joint Office, he led INL’s mobility systems group. During his 15-year tenure at INL, he has formed and led cross-functional teams of experts in transportation, energy storage, power systems, cybersecurity, data science, and machine learning. Before joining INL, he spent six years at Ford Motor Company, leading powertrain product development and manufacturing teams from multiple automakers and suppliers. John earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Brigham Young University and a master’s degree in business administration from Boise State University.
