Abstract

The XFEMClipPartialElements tool is a plugin for the open-source Paraview visualization software to correctly visualize results with discontinuities represented using the extended finite element method (XFEM) in MOOSE-based codes. The MOOSE framework has an ability to use the extended finite element method (XFEM) to represent arbitrary discontinuities in a solution field. The XFEM implementation in MOOSE uses a technique known as the phantom node method, which duplicates finite elements that are split by a discontinuity. In this technique, the split elements contain a physical and a non-physical component. To correctly visualize the results from such a simulation, the non-physical portions of those duplicated elements must be removed. The XFEMClipPartialElements tool is a plugin for the open-source Paraview code that modifies the appearance of the visualized results from MOOSE-based codes to correctly clip the non-physical portions of the partial elements.
