Abstract

Due to the renewed interest in driver uranium products following the pyrometallurgical processing of used EBR-II fuel, the radiation levels and transuranic content have been assessed with recommendations for their reduction. It is anticipated that the radiation levels could be reduced to 5-50 mR/hr/kg based on previous adjustments to the distillation operating sequence. Although lowering the transuranic content to less than 20 ppm by either salt washing or reaction with uranium trichloride is technically viable, salt washing would be simpler to implement considering the operational aspects of the process. Thus, it appears entirely feasible to transform the driver uranium products to a salable product with significantly reduced characteristics.
