Thermal characteristics of a neptunium bearing Pu-40Zr based alloy

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

The thermal characterization of Neptunium (Np) bearing Pu-40Zr based alloys with respect to the formation of low temperature melting phases was discussed. A laboratory scale modified arc-melting technique was developed to fabricate metal alloy fuel pin slugs. The results from thermomechanical analysis (TMA) show an initial expansion at lower temperature with a linear expansion coefficient α of about 4.7×10 -6/°C. It was also observed that at 444°C the expansion increases to an average α of about 60×10 -6/°C over about a 120°C.
