Abstract

The study of stainless steel 316 has been undertaken in electrolytes containing various concentrations of chloride (Cl-) and perchlorate (ClO4-) ions. The Cl- concentration [Cl -] in these electrolytes varied between 0.025 and 0.1 M in a variety of combinations with ClO4-. Results showed that the total number of nucleation and metastable pitting events increased as [Cl-] and potential increased. The percentage propagation of metastable pits from nucleations decreased as [Cl-] increased but was unaffected as potential increased. The data also showed that the metallurgical condition of the specimen affected the number of nucleations and metastable pits generated.
