Abstract
A new method, diameter-compression testing, is evaluated for application in concrete core testing. The method uses a special compression apparatus to test concrete cores that require no further preparation after removal from the structure. This paper examines the results of a laboratory investigation in which over 600 cores with diameters of 55 mm were drilled and tested. The influence of total length and compressed length of concrete cores on the test index is examined. A simple linear relationship between cube strength and the diameter-compression strength was observed. The variability and accuracy of the new method for small cores were obtained and compared with those of conventional compression testing. It is argued that this new method offers a practical alternative to the conventional compression testing of cores.
