Abstract

A steady-state, one-dimensional ablative surface model has been developed for coupling with hypersonic CFD applications in two- and three-dimensions. Details and assumptions of the steady-state model are presented along with the CFD boundary condition implementation and associated loose-coupling methodology. A preliminary sensitivity analysis for coefficients present within the ablation model kinetics and flow transport properties is also presented for one of the primary quantities of interest in ablation modeling, the recession rate. Finally, the coupled approach is applied to a sphere-cone graphite model, corresponding to an arcjet stream experimental configuration performed at NASA's Ames Research Center.
