Abstract

The simulations developed in support of this work have shown that gamma and total neutron emissions can be applied as a safeguards measurement techniques in the SSPM EChem model within the selected fuel domain. Further analysis, specifically in (α, n) emissions, could lead to differentiating its contribution to total emissions as well as its contribution to the thermal energy region. Research is ongoing to quantify this contribution. The XRF curve-fitting algorithms were able to accurately approximate the spectrum simply as a sum of independent Gaussian functions (representing peaks), with background, within both the K-α and K-β regions of the spectrum. Based on these results, XRF could provide essential safeguards measurements for pyroprocessing, and if coupled with similarly accurate KED measurements, HKED may be an efficient materials accountancy tool for pyroprocessing applications.
