Abstract
Research into new and improved methods of partial or complete recycle of actinides from used nuclear fuel is underway as part of the Department of Energy's Fuel Cycle Research and Development program. Separations methods under investigation include solvent extraction, ion exchange/extraction chromatography, volatilization, and pyrochemical/electrochemical technologies. An overview of current research in used nuclear fuel separations, including recent accomplishments will be discussed. Additionally, insights into potential alternative fuel recycle scenarios and innovative technologies under development by the program will be provided.
