Abstract

To study the corrosion of structural alloys in actinide-based molten chloride salt, we analyze three-dimensional focused-ion beam tomography data. This data provides information about the composition and microstructure of alloy 617 after it has been corroded in a mixture of sodium chloride and magnesium chloride eutectic salt at a temperature of 700 degrees Celsius for a duration of 1000 hours.

The dataset contains 33 GB of .png image files. Each file shows a two-dimensional distribution of different elements found in a slice of the specimen. We also have .ang files that provide microstructural information obtained from each slice using electron backscatter diffraction. By processing the .ang files, we can visualize the alloy grains in each slice.

This dataset is valuable for computational scientists, especially those working on three-dimensional modeling of corrosion at the mesoscale. It allows them to validate the accuracy of their models directly. The dataset offers a new way to study corrosion by combining elemental and microstructural data from a corroded alloy in a three-dimensional volume. As a result, it provides a larger and more realistic representation of data from the specimen.
