Abstract

HF skywave channels are typically characterized by one or two main paths. Taking note of this, in a previous paper, we proposed a two path RAKE architecture for the receiver in a filter bank multicarrier spread spectrum (FB-MC-SS) system. Using this architecture, we found that good performance can be obtained with much wider subcarrier bandwidths than is possible with a single path receiver. The main challenge with this RAKE architecture, which was not considered in this previous paper, is selecting the RAKE path delays. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for selecting these path delays. Satisfactory performance of the RAKE architecture and the algorithm for selecting the RAKE path delays are demonstrated through simulations and over the air transmission of FB-MC-SS data packets.
