N2 - In the United States High Temperature Gas Reactors, which use TRISO fuel, are being considered as a possibility for future commercial power generation. Commercial operation of a significant number of gas reactors would have a dramatic impact on future geological repositories. To evaluate the possible impact on the geological repository, a detailed qualification plan for permanent disposition of TRISO fuel was developed by comparing TRISO fuel with high level waste (HLW) glass and commercial spent nuclear fuel (CSNF), and outlining the steps needed to qualify TRISO fuel as its own waste form.
