Abstract

In the EPR design there is a 100% MOX core with a slightly increased moderation ratio (2.5 instead of 2). Multirecycling Pu and Am in this core using a MOX fuel with enriched U (MOX-UE) was investigated and the results are presented in this paper. The principle is to compensate the degradation of the Pu quality by an increase of the U235 enrichment instead of an increase of the Pu content. To stabilize the Pu inventory, MOX-UE fuel with a 12% Pu content should produce between 25% and 28% of the energy. Adding Am to the fuel necessitates a drastic reduction of the Pu content in order to preserve a negative void coefficient and to increase the U235 enrichments significantly. The percentage of MOX-UE Pu+Am needed to stabilize the Pu and Am inventories is about 40%.
