abstract = "A fabrication and testing method was developed to assess the performance of thin film Pt and Pt alloy cathode catalysts in an operating fuel cell. Pt and Pt alloy thin films were sputter deposited onto carbon/Nafion decals and subsequently hot pressed with the catalyst towards the membrane. The results show that improved mass performance and catalyst utilization is observed with Pt thin films and that increased mass activities are achieved with PtCo (76:24) and PtCr (80:20) alloys as compared to pure Pt. Mass activity improvements of 14 mV and 8 mV were observed for the PtCo and PtCr alloys with respect to a pure Pt film with a similar mass loading under 300/350 kPa hydrogen/oxygen operation. Details of fabrication and testing are provided including testing nuances of cathode thin films due to poor water management.",
