Novel Fuel Form Fabrication

Research output: Book/ReportProgram Documentpeer-review

Abstract

Novel fuel form fabrication efforts have focused on casting of smaller diameter fuels in order to show the feasibility of the FAST test and the incorporation of a FCCI barrier either integral to the fuel or within the cladding tube. Casting of small diameter fuel slugs proved to be feasible at least one pin at a time using vacuum assisted arc casting. Integration of an integral FCCI barrier is also feasible although additional refinement will be necessary. If a sodium bonded fuel is employed, a more simple FCCI barrier may be to incorporate a thin barrier of material in the cladding before the sodium and fuel are loaded. Experiments have shown that sodium bonding of the barrier material and fuel is feasible.
