Nonproliferation of Cyber Weapons

The Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons has been the basis for international cooperation on stopping the spread of nuclear weapons. However, in the last twenty years, the world has seen the emergence of a new type of weapon, cyber weapons. The impacts of these attacks in the physical realm is possible in part to the convergence of informational and operational technology. This paper examines examples of cyber weapons and their impacts on critical infrastructure. Additionally, the paper discusses the differences between nuclear weapons and cyber weapons, identifies the challenges of disarmament, and postulates ways to overcome them.
