Abstract
Despite its broad use throughout the world for a multitude of purposes, asphalt is not very well characterized with regard to its chemical constituents. Among the modern organic tools, NMR spectrometry represents a probe which can provide many details regarding the structure and functionality of asphalts. This is particularly true if it is combined with chromatography and/or chemical modifications (1-11). For this project, eight core asphalts were selected. Aromatic/aliphatic ratios, 135 DEPT and phenol/carboxylic acid contents were readily analyzed.
