However, the fermentation process only yields 2-10\% of alcohol. A discussion covers a separation technology that can significantly reduce the energy usage for biofuel recovery from fermentations; the membrane-based liquid-liquid extraction process; use of ionic liquid (IL) as the extracting solvent for ethanol recovery; environmental aspects; Separation factor; and product recovery from the IL extractant.
