Abstract

Contemporary research in risk and safety across a variety of industries strongly suggests the role of organizational factors in operational and public safety. Recent work sponsored by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has sought to better understand the role of these management and organizational (M&O) factors in plant performance and risk. As part of this effort, a model for conceptualizing the contribution of M&O to risk has been formulated. This paper reviews the model, and ongoing research efforts to extend the envelope of causality in the risk assessment process, and to explicitly consider the influence of M&O factors in plant performance and risk.
