Abstract
The laser assisted arc welding of ultra high strength steels was discussed. It was found that the joint strength retention of hybrid welding was a compromise between gas metal arc's low joint strengths and laser's higher joint strengths. The higher ductility and lower weld metal hardness produced by the hybrid process provided superior formability. Analysis show that the welding speed of hybrid welding was approximately 4 times greater than gas metal arc welding and 1.4 times greater than laser welding.
