International focus on instrumentation, controls, and human-machine interface technologies

Various international meetings have been held in 2006-2007, in which, addressing digital I&C and human-machine interface have been discussed. Instrumentation, controls, and human-machine interfaces (ICHMI) are essential enabling technologies that influence nuclear power plant performance and operational costs. The introduction of digital technologies through the modernization of I&C systems at the development of digital control rooms at new plants poses unique regulatory and technical challenges for international nuclear power community. New computer based digital I&C systems that have been installed in nuclear power plants for functions are also useful for safety. Improvement in I&C systems may lead to higher power output and better performance of nuclear power plants. The increased attention for resolving technical and regulatory impediments to the extensive use of digital technology in nuclear power plants is evidenced by the meetings.
