N2 - Electric grid reliability and resiliency is an urgent concern with extreme and ever-increasing demands and threats placed on U.S. power grid operations. Daily, grid operators must carry out continuous maintenance and replacement requirements along with constant monitoring, adjustment, and forecasting to protect the grid and equipment from failure. Additionally, they must be prepared for abnormal and emergency events created by weather, extreme events, and abnormal or emergency situations. Idaho National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories collaborated on a research effort applying human reliability analysis (HRA) methods to power grid operations. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with grid utility operators from a variety of grid utilities and similar contexts to obtain greater general understanding of the grid operation experience, insight into operator mental models, and clarity regarding which aspects of operations can be improved or enhanced. Examining the experiences of grid operators, previous electrical grid power outages, and understanding potential error traps is critical to increasing the effectiveness, efficiency, and resiliency of grid operations.
