Abstract

At the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and other locations across southern Idaho, geophysical tools are being used to discover, map, and evaluate archaeological sites. A variety of settings are being explored to understand the characteristics of geophysical signatures relevant to archaeology in the region. Current targets of interest include: prehistoric archaeological sites in open areas as well as lava tube caves, historical structures, and emigrant travel paths. We draw from a comprehensive geophysical instrumentation pool to support this work. Results from recent surveys show the geophysical response to these archeological features are relatively subtle and interpretation requires an understanding and experience in interpreting geophysical results.
