Abstract

This chapter introduces the annals and the latest advances in modification of suture threads. A comprehensive analysis of the properties of modified and functionalized suture threads is detailed. Furthermore, the properties are correlated with the type of monomer or modifying species added to the original suture material. Next, it is shown a brief review of most common modification techniques for suture threads, emphasizing difficulties and benefits. The second part of the chapter summarizes and explains some researches where the functionalization of fibers is achieved with improved properties (i.e., mechanical, wound healing, and antimicrobial) for absorbable and nonabsorbable sutures.
