N2 - The idea of ultra-wideband (UWB) communications for short ranges (up to a few tens of meters) has been around since 1990s. However, despite many efforts by the industry (especially, in the time period of 2002, when FCC allocated 7.5 GHz of spectrum for unlicensed use of UWB, to 2006), UWB deployment has never reached its predicted potential, partly because of disagreements on the best technology in this domain. This article introduces an alternative technology based on filter banks and discusses the advantages that it brings to the table.
