Abstract

This chapter discusses corrosion phenomena in nuclear system employing molten salts as liquid fuel or coolant material. First, molten salt reactor concepts are reviewed, along with a brief historical perspective on their development. The physical and chemical phenomena involved in the corrosion process in molten salt media are then described. The references on corrosion data available from systems operation and R&D activities are then discussed in detail, along with quantitative and phenomenological observation. Finally, monitoring methods are discussed along with the limited information on corrosion control and lifetime prediction based on the limited experience available.
