N2 - The control system of a fission power system for application on the surface of the moon must be reliable. Generally, two control strategies are to be considered. The system could be designed to be as simple as possible with as few components as possible. Control could be manual or automated through a simple control system; however, it would be difficult or impossible to make changes in the system if they were deemed necessary. At the other extreme, the system could be designed with sophisticated hardware that permits autonomous control and operational flexibility. Regardless of the strategy ultimately chosen, the control and protection systems must be implemented in hardware. The control requirements of a small fission power system are discussed, and the implications of various control strategies are presented. Current hardware available to perform control functions is reviewed, and technology gaps are identified.
