Comparative review of the long-lived wastes transmutation performances in nuclear reactor

Abstract

The transmutation in different nuclear reactor types has been widely studied in the recent past. The comparison of the intrinsic ability based on physic approach shows the interest of the fast spectrum. But the transmutation of minor actinides is possible too in PWRs. The impact of the Cm multirecycling on fuel cycle in PWR shows the interest of a temporary repository of this nuclide (and some studies on this subject are in progress). The MOX-UE concept for PWR allows the recycling of Pu and Am together. Later, the GEN IV systems will be able to treat their own waste and absorb the residual waste from PWRs. Another possibility could be to use ADT if GEN IV systems appear later, and a first design of a gas cooled ADT is presented here.
