Abstract

A catalyst for the oxidative dehydrogenation of a paraffin to form an olefin, the catalyst having a general formula Mo a V b X c Y d O n wherein: X= at least one of Nb and Ta; Y= at least one of Te, Sb, Ga, Pd, W, Bi and Al; a= 1.0; b= 0.05 to 1.0; c= 0.001 to 1.0; d= 0.001 to 1.0; and n is determined by the oxidation states of the other elements. The catalyst may have a selectivity to the olefin of at least 90 mole% at a paraffin conversion of at least 65%.
