Abstract

The very fast transient overvoltage(VFTO) caused by operation of disconnector in a GIS substation will harm the GIS equipment, the transformer, and the secondary equipment connected with GIS due to its high amplitude. In this study, for design and layout of GIS substation, this paper calculated the parameter of major equipment of a 800 kV GIS substation, and the calculation was verified by measurement. Moreover, EMTP program was adopted to simulate the VFTO generated by disconnector in six different operating modes, thus the maximum values and location of VFTO in the six different operating modes of disconnector were obtained. comparison with the safe criteria indicated that the insulation of the 800 kV GIS substation meets the requirements. In addition, the factors influencing VFTO amplitude, such as residual voltage, damping resistance and short-bus length, were analyzed.
