Abstract
Several approximate solutions to the Neumann problem and its counterpart in cylindrical coordinates have been obtained using Taylor series expansions. The accuracy of these solutions is comparable with other approximate solutions for naturally occurring freeze/thaw applications. The equations provide an easy and accurate method of determining the depth of freeze/thaw and temperature profiles without using graphs, tables or numerical solutions to transcendental equations. Rational functions are proposed as an alternative to Taylor series expansions.
