Analysis of topaz-II rector performance using MCNP and TFEHX

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

Data reported by Russian scientist and engineers for the TOPAZ-II Space Nuclear Power is compared with analytical results calculated using the Monte Carlo Neutron and Photon (MCNP) and TFEHX computer codes. The coupled interactions of the thermionic emission process and the conductive, radiative, and convective heat transfer processes involved with removing the heat from the TFE requires detailed modeling. The heat generation within the fuel, obtained from MCNP, is not generally uniform along the length of the TFE due to neutron leakage. The axial heat distribution can be represented by a chopped cosine function.
