Abstract
High pressure gas-atomized Cu-2%Zr powders were dynamically consolidated using an explosive technique. An extended solid solution of zirconium in copper results from atomization and is retained after consolidation. Age hardening is observed in the dynamically consolidated material. The magnitude of hardening is larger in material consolidated from fine powder compared to coarse powder. A peak age-hardening temperature of 350 °C is found for dynamically consolidated material. This temperature is substantially lower than that found for melt-spun ribbons of CuZr with similar extended solid solubility, suggesting that the kinetics of precipitation is accelerated by shock-induced defects.
