note = "Funding Information: This paper highlights the project overview and the benefits of the international collaboration from the perspectives of scientific deliverables and support for the mission of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE). Funding Information: The team at ICL will bring extensive capability in the analysis and modelling of critical heat flux and the associated fundamental physical processes concerning steam bubble growth. This covers the two radically different circumstances under which overheating of fuel can occur; namely, film dry out at high quality, and {"}bubble crowding{"} DNB develops under low quality conditions. Supported by international collaborations (Switzerland, Korea, Sweden, India) in these areas, ICL is working to develop models for {"}component scale{"} prediction of boiling and CHF using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), funded by the UK nuclear industry (Rolls Royce), the UK Research Councils, and the UK Nuclear Regulator. This is complemented by more fundamental small-scale studies of the underlying processes associated with bubble growth, and of the interaction of this growth with the physical properties of the surface on which they are growing. This will be particularly important in attempting to understand the CHF behavior of ATF.
