Abstract

A conceptual design of an advanced facility for recycling spent oxide nuclear fuels using pyroprocessing techniques has been developed. The key operations include shredding of the spent oxide fuel elements, direct electrolytic reduction of the shredded oxide fuel elements, separation and extraction of uranium by electrorefining the reduced metal, recovery of transuranic metals, and consolidation of the products from these operations. A process flowsheet, which includes detailed mass balances, has been developed based on pressurized water reactor oxide fuel feed. For all operations, detailed step-by-step requirements have been established. These requirements have allowed the sizing of equipment to optimize flow through the facility. A simulation model of the facility has been generated and is being utilized to further refine the design and operation of the facility.
