Dr. Sambandh Bhusan Dhal is a Postdoctoral Associate at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), where he leads research initiatives at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), hyperspectral imaging, and sustainable material systems. His work focuses on developing uncertainty-aware machine learning frameworks tailored for data-scarce environments, with applications spanning precision agriculture, bioenergy, e-waste classification, and the circular economy. Dr. Dhal’s expertise lies in leveraging semi-supervised learning, transfer learning, and deep learning to tackle real-world challenges involving sparse, noisy, and high-dimensional data.
At INL, Dr. Dhal contributes to national initiatives by integrating AI-driven process control and advanced sensing technologies in clean energy and manufacturing sectors. His research includes optimizing molten salt electroplating for accident-tolerant nuclear claddings, developing AI models for real-time multi-sensor sorting of complex material mixtures, and designing machine learning pipelines for biomass feedstock characterization and preservation. He serves as a Principal Investigator on DOE-funded projects, leading efforts to advance data-driven approaches for biofuel production and materials recovery, and has secured over $1.7 million in direct and co-investigated research funding.
Dr. Dhal earned his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Texas A&M University, where his dissertation focused on uncertainty-aware, data-driven modeling for sparse agricultural datasets. His graduate work included pioneering IoT-integrated decision support systems for soil-less agriculture, UAV-based hyperspectral imaging for plant disease detection, and statistical frameworks for resource optimization under limited observations. He has authored over 20 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers, contributing significantly to the fields of AI-driven agriculture, environmental monitoring, and sustainable materials research.
A recipient of multiple prestigious awards—including the Distinguished Graduate Student Award for Excellence in Research and the Texas Instruments Graduate Mentoring Fellowship—Dr. Dhal has also demonstrated leadership through his roles as Vice-President for Community Engagement at Texas A&M’s Graduate & Professional Student Government and Advisor for the Indian Graduate Students’ Association. He is an active member of IEEE-HKN and the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE), and serves as a reviewer for several top-tier journals including IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems and Sensors.
Dr. Dhal is passionate about bridging advanced data science methodologies with real-world impact, and is committed to advancing the frontiers of AI, sustainability, and circular economy solutions through interdisciplinary research and education.
Development of machine learning and AI algorithms tailored for data-scarce environments, with
a focus on semi-supervised, transfer, and uncertainty-aware learning methods. These frameworks
are applied to precision agriculture and circular economy systems where labeled data is limited,
including anomaly detection in sparse sensor networks, nutrient and resource optimization under
limited observations, and spectroscopic analysis in remote sensing with minimal calibration data.
My work also includes chemometric modeling for material classification, time-series analysis of
crop stress and growth with incomplete sequences, deep learning for low-sample plant disease
detection, and design of IoT-integrated decision support systems that operate effectively despite
sparse or noisy input signals.
