Biography
Shafiul is a research scientist in the Power & Energy Systems Group of INL’s Energy & Environment Science & Technology Directorate. Currently he is serving as the Co-Principal Investigator for U.S. Department of Energy's a) WPTO funded project “Hydro + Storage: Accelerating Industry Deployment of Hydropower Hybrids”, b) WETO funded project “Wind Power as a Real Synchronous Generation (WindSG)”, and c) WPTO funded project “Hydropower Component Degradation and Prognostics”. Shafiul served as the Technical Lead of 1) planning, and execution of ultracapacitor hardware-in-the-loop simulation, 2) onsite deployment of micro PMU and data management for the preparation of April 2021 Idaho Falls Power Black Start Field Demonstration. He also served as the Principal Investigator for the laboratory directed research and development (LDRD) project “High Performance Computing-based Dynamically Adaptive Protection Schemes for Electric Grid” that built the high performance real-time co-simulation platform and developed several transmission switching based blackout mitigation heuristics. Prior INL, Shafiul was a postdoctoral researcher in the Power System Engineering Center at National Renewable Energy Laboratory, where he developed distributed PV generation estimation algorithm, and worked on the power and communication hardware-in-the-loop testbed as part of the “Opportunistic Hybrid Communications Systems for Distributed PV Coordination” project. To-date, his research articles have been cited at least 1000 times.
Research Interests
Modeling, and control development of hybrid energy systems, digital real-time simulation in hardware-in-the-loop setting for lab-scale validation and demonstration.
