Biography

Dr. Parikshit Bajpai is the Russell L. Heath distinguished postdoctoral research associate in the Computational Mechanics and Materials Department at Idaho National Laboratory. Dr. Bajpai’s expertise is in design and development of computational thermochemistry tools for multiphysics modeling of nuclear fuels and materials. Bajpai currently leads an INL Laboratory Directed Research and Development project aimed at developing surrogate models and computational methods to accelerate the thermodynamically informed multiphysics simulations using the MOOSE framework. His research involves the use of machine learning and physics-informed reduced-order models to enable large-scale thermodynamics-coupled simulations of nuclear reactors and materials. In particular, the applications of the project include molten-salt reactor (MSR) modeling, including corrosion on the microstructural scale using phase-field method and source-term and safety analyses on the engineering scale. Bajpai’s research also includes several projects under the Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program. He works on material-property and mechanistic modeling of several advanced nuclear-grade graphites for the nuclear systems degradation code Grizzly and is contributing to the development of full-loop MSR chemistry and corrosion model in MOOSE, with species accountancy and depletion. In the past, during his doctoral program, Bajpai was lead developer of a MOOSE-based Gibbs-energy minimizer, Yellowjacket, which was funded by the NEAMS program. He holds a PhD in modelling and computational science from Ontario Tech University, Canada. During his doctoral studies, he developed a MOOSE-based thermochemical-equilibrium solver. Before that, he obtained a master’s degree in nuclear engineering from Politecnico di Milano, Italy, where he developed computational models for predicting the reactivity feedback of helium bubbling system in the Molten Salt Fast Reactor. This work won him the best poster award at the 27th International Conference Nuclear Energy for New Europe, 2018. He is an active member of American Nuclear Society, Canadian Nuclear Society, and Society of Industrial Applied Mathematics.
