Biography

Dr. Maria Coelho is a Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) Scientist at the Idaho National Laboratory. In her current role, she leads digital engineering activities across a  variety  of  advanced  energy  projects, including INL’s hydrogen production initiative, integrated energy system demonstrations, and advanced nuclear reactors research and development.  Her work along with her peers has advanced the implementation and integration of MBSE,  digital  twin, digital thread, and extended reality technologies across the design, commissioning and operation phases of system development. Maria also participates in multiple digital twin standardization task-forces to enable a wider adoption of digital twin technology in nuclear industry applications. Before joining INL, Maria obtained  a  Ph.D.  degree  in  Civil  Engineering  from  the  University  of  Maryland,  where  she  investigated digital twin design for urban infrastructure operation. Her research explored the combination of machine learning and semantic model representations of urban systems, for collecting data, identifying anomalies, and managing city operations in real-time. She received a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering with a Minor in Project Management as well as a M.S. in Civil Systems from the University of Maryland.
