Research Interests

Dr. Banerjee is an internationally recognized leader in nuclear waste management, with
extensive expertise in developing and applying mathematical and computational methods
for radiation shielding, criticality safety, and reactor analyses. He specializes in Monte
Carlo radiation transport and burnup credit criticality safety analyses for the storage,
transportation, and disposal of spent nuclear fuel. With over 15 years of experience, Dr.
Banerjee has successfully initiated, led, and managed major R&D projects in nuclear waste
and radiation transport areas.
For more than a decade, he has supported the Department of Energy’s Integrated Waste
Management (IWM) in various capacities, including as control account managers, as well
as serving as interim national technical director. In this role, Dr. Banerjee has spearheaded
annual planning efforts among national laboratory participants to develop an Integrated
Priority List (IPL) of proposed activities for implementing consent-based siting and
crosscut programs. He skillfully translates the approved IPL language and funding levels
into comprehensive work package scopes and spending plans for all participating national
laboratories, ensuring alignment with the NE project management system (PICs).
Dr. Banerjee has also contributed to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) through
safety analysis reviews, particularly for dose-related safety assessments of Interim Storage
Partners and Holtec International’s consolidated interim storage facilities in Texas and
New Mexico.
Dr. Banerjee currently supports the DOE’s Office of Nuclear Fuel Supply Technologies.
He initiated the Uranium Fuel Supply campaign, which oversees and coordinates the
planning, management, and technical integration of efforts conducted by DOE national
laboratories and industry partners. The campaign aims to supply initial HALEU to the
industry for reactor demonstration purposes and ultimately establish a commercially
independent supply chain for both HALEU and LEU.
Previously, Dr. Banerjee led the Nuclear Material Storage, Transportation, and Logistics
group at PNNL, as well as the Nuclear Materials Packaging, Transportation & System
Analysis group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
