Biography

Dr. Junyung Kim is a Computational Scientist in the Autonomous Engineering Department at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). His current research focuses on light water reactor (LWR) thermal power uprates, capacity expansion, development of time-at-temperature–based safety metrics, and fuel reload optimization within the Light Water Reactor Sustainability (LWRS) Program. He is a primary developer of RAVEN (Risk Analysis Virtual ENvironment), an INL-developed open-source software platform that supports model exploration, risk analysis, uncertainty quantification, and design optimization for nuclear reactor applications. At INL, Dr. Kim is involved in multiple programmatic and Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) projects, including thermal integration of nuclear-generated heat with non-electric applications, AI/ML-based optimization of reactor fuel reload strategies, and development of uncertainty quantification methods for digital-twin-enabled autonomous control. He has extensive experience in system-level modeling using RELAP5, Dymola, and ASPEN HYSYS. Dr. Kim has authored over 40 journal and conference publications in thermodynamic system modeling, process optimization using reinforcement learning and genetic algorithms, probabilistic risk analysis, and decision-making using Bayesian network approaches.
