Biography

Joseph Nielsen, P.E., is an engineer/scientist in the Experiment Design and Analysis Department at Idaho National Laboratory. In this capacity, his primary focus is neutronics analysis to support the implementation of experiments in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR). These experiments include Reduced Enrichment Research and Test Reactors (RERTR), ATR Full-size Plate In Center Flux Trap Position (AFIP) and National Scientific User Facility (NSUF).

Nielsen has been with INL more than 10 years and has experience in nuclear safety engineering. He also has a strong background in reactor physics, nuclear criticality safety, nuclear safety and probabilistic risk assessment. He holds a B.S. in physics from Colorado School of Mines and an M.S. in nuclear engineering from Idaho State University. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in nuclear engineering and has written numerous conference papers regarding nuclear safety. He is a member of the American Nuclear Society and is on the Professional Engineering Exam Development Committee within the ANS. Outside of work he enjoys golfing, hunting and camping.
