Biography
Gerhard Strydom is a NS&T Directorate Fellow at INL and the National Technical Director for the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Advanced Reactor Technology (ART) Gas-Cooled Reactors (GCR) campaign since 2019. He is responsible for overseeing the TRISO fuel and graphite qualification programs at INL, in addition to the ART GCR program activities on high-temperature alloys and High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (HTGR) simulation method development and validation. He represents DOE on the IAEA HTGR Technical Working Group (TWG), and as the Chair of the Generation-IV Forum VHTR System Steering Committee and DOE representative on the GIF Expert Group since 2017. His primary technical focus areas are multiphysics HTGR analysis and uncertainty propagation from lattice to transient simulations.
Prior to joining INL in 2010, Strydom worked at the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) company for 7 years, where he led the PBMR core design and accident analysis team. He holds a PhD in nuclear engineering from Northwest University in South Africa, and is a member of the American Nuclear Society. Outside of work he enjoys hiking, motorcycling, biking and travel.
