Biography

Doug Crawford is Chief Reactors Technologist at the Material Fuels Complex (MFC), after serving three and a half years as Director of the Transient Reactor Test Facility (TREAT) Division. His current duties include technical support and review of MFC operating reactors and MFC reactor demonstration projects. Previously, he served as MFC Chief Scientist, responsible for compiling strategies to modernize MFC research capabilities to meet INL mission needs, fostering collaborations with nuclear universities and laboratories, and facilitating industrial partnerships to meet fuels and materials research and development needs. Crawford has also contributed to the Versatile Reactor Project addressing fuel cycle planning and fuel design.

From 1990 to 2007, Crawford worked at Argonne National Laboratory-West and INL. In 2007, he joined Global Nuclear Fuel and GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, leading engineering teams providing fuel and reload services and plant system and component services. In 2016, he served at Oak Ridge National Laboratory as reactor technology leader and GAIN deputy director. Crawford’s expertise includes fast reactor and boiling water reactor fuel performance and design, fuel safety testing and licensing, fuel specification, technical leadership, issue resolution, and nuclear materials storage technology.

Crawford earned his bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering from the University of Idaho in 1984, followed by master's and doctorate degrees in nuclear engineering from the University of Washington and the University of Michigan, respectively. He furthered his education by obtaining an MBA from the University of Chicago in 2005.

Crawford's award recognition includes the GE Hitachi Nuclear Quality Cup Team Member in April 2008 and the ANS Materials Science and Technology Division 2006 Significant Contribution Award.
