Biography

Brian Newell started at INL in July of 2023 and is the instrument scientist for the Bruker D8 Discover and PANalytical Empyrean X-ray diffractometers located at the Material and Fuels Complex's (MFC) Irradiated Materials Characterization Laboratory (IMCL) and the Bruker D8 Discover X-ray diffractometer that will be located at the Sample Preparation Laboratory (SPL). With a robust background as a Research Scientist and specialized skills in multiple X-ray diffraction (single crystal, powder, thin film, reflectometry, glancing angle, high-resolution) and scattering techniques, Dr. Newell is committed to refining the scientific understanding of materials science. His work, drawing from experience at Colorado State University, contributes significantly to developing innovative solutions for complex challenges in materials discovery.

Dr. Newell’s role encompasses pioneering advanced characterization techniques, specifically X-ray and Neutron Diffraction, to enhance the analysis of nuclear materials and fuels. His team's efforts are integral to the expansion of INL's North Neutron Beam Room, preparing for groundbreaking research in the nuclear sector.
