Biography
Dr. Arindam Mukhopadhyay is a Staff Scientist in the Chemical Systems Department of the Energy & Environment Science & Technology Division at Idaho National Laboratory.
He holds an M.S. and a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India. His Ph.D. research on synthetic materials chemistry encompasses the development of stimuli-responsive pi-conjugated organic materials, fluorescent and chiroptical organic molecular systems, porous crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for chemosensing, and photoresponsive 2D nanoscale materials with tunable optoelectronic properties. He completed his postdoctoral research in Chemistry at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida, where he leveraged organic synthesis, surface chemistry, electrochemistry, and supramolecular chemistry to develop diverse semiconducting Si-organic nanointerfaces for interrogating the fundamental aspects of interfacial charge-carrier migration and excited-state energy transfer at hybrid monolayers as applied to charge storage and nonvolatile electronic memory. At INL, his current research focuses on synthetic chemistry for advanced materials manufacturing, chemical and electrochemical processes relevant to critical materials recovery and decarbonization (CO2 capture), and development of materials for energy systems.
An active voice in the scientific community, Dr. Mukhopadhyay has 34 peer-reviewed journal publications so far and has served as an expert reviewer for over 130 articles in diverse journals published by the American Chemical Society (ACS), Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), Wiley-VCH, and Elsevier. For his significant peer-reviewing contributions to the journal Chemical Communications, he was awarded the 'Outstanding Reviewer Award' from RSC for two consecutive years (2022 and 2023). He is an active member of the ACS, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the Electrochemical Society (ECS). He holds Editorial Board positions in three peer-reviewed journals, Frontiers in Chemistry, Frontiers in Chemical Biology, and PLOS One. He is a selected member of the Leadership Academy (Cohort 5) of the Critical Materials Innovation Hub (CMI) led by the U.S. Department of Energy.
